Charlton Athletic striker in “transition” period – with lockdown not aiding settling in process
Lee Bowyer reckons that Ronnie Schwartz is still in the “transition phase” of his Charlton Athletic career.
The striker, 31, was signed from FC Midtyjlland at the start of January.
Schwartz has made 13 appearances in League One but just three of those have been starts. His only goal came in the 4-4 draw with Rochdale at The Valley shortly after moving to London.
“It’s a bit of a transition for Ronnie,” said Charlton manager Bowyer. “It is a change of country – I know his family are back in Denmark and his wife is pregnant. That change is difficult.
“With lockdown he goes in for training and then can only sit in his flat for the rest of the time. That is difficult too. Training is a release for him.
“He is learning the league. In other European countries it is very, very technical and he has played for a team who were top of their division and he got a lot of chances in games. This league is completely different. It is so physical.
“I know what he brings us. If he gets a chance I know he will take it. But at the moment when he comes on and partners someone he needs to impact without just getting a chance. There’s more to the game than that. That’s why he is adjusting.”

Perhaps not such a good acquisition after all at his time. With the domestic situation not being ideal, with his wife pregnant and in Denmark and Covid curtailing any real chance of socialising, it is no wonder Ronnie is finding it hard to adjust. Perhaps he will be a player for next season, when, hopefully crowds will be back and travelling restrictions have eased. he has the pedigree and experience, but only time will tell.
