Charlton Athletic’s Greg Docherty on wearing the armband and learning loads off Rangers skipper

Greg Docherty has talked about his responsibilities as the new captain of Charlton Athletic.

Addicks manager Nathan Jones gave the armband to the 27-year-old Scot for the current campaign.

Docherty signed in the close season after being released by Hull City.

Asked who the best skipper was he had played under, Docherty told the South London Press: “If I think back to Rangers then the captain then was James Tavernier, who I felt led be example on the pitch. He was very consistent.

“Steven Davis was part of that dressing room and I learned a lot off him, I leaned a lot on him – what he did for Northern Ireland, Southampton and Rangers, in his first and second spell.

“I still speak to him now and I’m sure I’ll be in touch over the course of the season.

“He was someone I looked up as a player and I’d like to definitely emulate the way he worked as a captain.

“It is about standing up when needed. There are times when things will be going really well and it will be great. But there will be times, as in any season, that you need to look at your leaders in the team.

“I don’t take it lightly.

“The manager has touched on it, I’m the one wearing the armband – it’s a real honour – but we have a lot of leaders in the team. A lot who are driven to be successful and drive this club forward.

“People will look up to me and it’s something I’m really proud of, but there are other people here who have been there and done it in this league and know what is needed.”
