Charlton boss Adkins delighted Luke Shaw is starring for England at European Championships

Luke Shaw was handed his professional debut by Nigel Adkins – and the Charlton Athletic boss has spoken of his pride at the England international starring at the European Championships.

The 25-year-old Manchester United left-back has earned plenty of plaudits for his displays for his country at this summer’s tournament.

Shaw is expected to start again as England aim to book their spot in the final by defeating Denmark at Wembley tonight.

He was just 16 when Adkins showed faith to play him in the first-team at Southampton in the FA Cup.

“I’m delighted for Luke,” the Addicks manager told the South London Press. “I gave him his debut, as I did a lot of young players at Southampton. I gave him his debut in the Premier League at 17. At times he would only play half an hour and I’d take him off, because physically he wasn’t ready to play a full 90 minutes.

“But it’s all part of player development; they need time, they need nurturing and looking after.

“Luke’s doing great. He had a big move to Manchester United. The challenge for many young players is how do you nurture them, surround them and look after them? His acceleration has been fantastic. Likewise you’ve got [Aaron] Ramsdale and Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the squad as well. I gave a debut to Dominic as well.

“I’ve always had an eye out for young players. I want them to do well and I keep an eye on how their careers progress.

“I’m delighted for Luke, because he has had a few challenges over the years.”
