Charlton boss Adkins: I’d be totally happy for Stockley to take our next penalty
Nigel Adkins says he would have no issue with Jayden Stockley taking Charlton’s next penalty, despite failing to convert in yesterday’s 1-0 loss to Peterborough United.
The on-loan Preston striker saw his spot-kick pushed away by Joe Bursik.
And Stockley’s effort was similar to the one that Ronnie Schwartz could not put away in the 0-0 draw at Oxford in early March. Both men produced decent power but did not find the top or bottom corner.
Conor Washington had been the designated penalty taker under Adkins’ predecessor Lee Bowyer. But the Northern Ireland, only just back from a hamstring injury, was on the bench when Alex Gilbey was brought down by Frankie Kent.
Charlton manager Adkins, asked if Stockley was next in line if Washington is not available, said: “The guys have been talking amongst themselves. They’ve been taking penalties on a regular basis.
“Jayden is the one who has taken it there – I’d have every confidence in him taking it again. But it’s obviously something we’ll talk about as a team, because we have got to capitalise on them.
“It probably goes down as a good save, and not a bad penalty.”
