Charlton boss Bowyer: I’ve got no option but to play injured defender – we don’t have back-up option

BY RICHARD CAWLEY

Lewis Page is having to be managed through an ongoing groin problem – with the Charlton left-back needing to try and stay available until the next international break.

Addicks manager Lee Bowyer is hoping to have enough call-ups this time to be able to postpone their match at Walsall on October 13.

But Charlton have three League One matches before that along with an EFL Trophy tie at Stevenage.

Bowyer said: “Pagey’s is a groin injury and the pubis bone. It’s just an uncomfortable one, certain movements he’s in pain.

“We’ve got to manage him really, because he is struggling. We don’t really have cover for him – the only cover is Naby [Sarr], and Naby is playing centre-half now.

“That is a worry for me. I want to rest him, but I can’t – not unless I disrupt things. It won’t be natural if someone else goes out there. [Jamie Mascoll] is not ready. We’d have to think of someone else.

“There will become a time when I have to rest him. I’m hoping we’ll have enough go away in the international break and he can have 10 or 12 days for it to settle down a bit.”
