Charlton boss Bowyer was blocked in attempts to sign Hull striker in summer

BY RICHARD CAWLEY

Lee Bowyer has confirmed that Tom Eaves was a summer transfer target for Charlton Athletic – but that their attempts to bring him in were blocked.

The 27-year-old Liverpudlian was a free agent after leaving Gillingham and ended up signing for Hull City, who the Addicks host tomorrow night.

The Addicks’ transfer plans have to get the green light from Thomas Driesen, who works for owner Roland Duchatelet and is able to veto or approve deals.

“We were interested in him but weren’t allowed to bring him in,” said Bowyer. “We spoke with him, but we weren’t allowed.”

Eaves has scored twice in 19 Championship appearances.

“Their front three are good,” said Bowyer. “Their two wingers [Grosicki and Bowen] are the biggest threats and they’ve got big Eaves doing well. Okay, he doesn’t score many goals but he does a lot for the team. They get around him – he’s a big targetman who causes problems.

“They’ve got players who can hurt you and are established Championship players.”
