Charlton boss Lee Bowyer: Extra experience has made us tougher nut to crack on our travels

Lee Bowyer believes that he has greater experience in his Charlton squad – and that is what is helping them produce impressive results on the road.

The Addicks won 2-0 at Ipswich Town on Saturday. Only Hull City (six) have won more than Charlton (five) on the road.

The Addicks are third in the League One table and are joint top of the form guide for the last six matches with Accrington and Fleetwood. The trio have banked 13 points.

Asked about another victory on the road, Bowyer replied: “It’s good. That’s what you need to do if you want to get promotion – you have to be as strong away as you are at home.

“The Lincoln one [a 2-0 defeat in late September], if you remember that we shouldn’t really have lost that either.

“It is a good return.

“We are solid and have got a lot of experienced players in the squad. When we go away from home it is a bit like for like. A couple of years ago in this division we had a lot of youngsters and probably away from home we weren’t quite as strong. That’s not the case this year.”

It was the perfect response to the 4-2 loss to Burton last week.

“We got back to ourselves and we were very good from start to finish,” said Bowyer. “It was a professional performance, we controlled the game at times and we mixed the game up at times.

“Chuks was a constant threat. It was a good all-round performance. We should’ve scored more really, we got ourselves into a lot of good positions but it was just that final ball that we needed to take care of. But that’s being nit-picky.”
