Charlton boss Lee Bowyer: I feel sorry for Wigan’s manager, players and fans

Lee Bowyer has expressed his sympathy for Wigan’s plight after the Championship side went into administration yesterday.

The Latics will be deducted 12 points and it will be applied this season if they finish the Championship campaign out of the bottom three.

If they do end in the drop zone anyway then the punishment will be carried over to the 2020-21 season.

Wigan looked safe after winning all three of their fixtures since the restart to move on to 50 points.

“I feel sorry for the manager [Paul Cook],” said Charlton boss Bowyer. “He’s a good man Cooky – nice and very respectful.

“They were in a tough position earlier in the season and they turned it around before lockdown and then went on a good run since we came back.

“They had earned the right to stay out of the relegation zone. To maybe get pushed back in at some stage is harsh on the manager, players and the fans. That’s who I feel for.

“It is a shame to see a club get put in that situation when the ones who are on the pitch and the coaches have done nothing wrong. They are the ones who will end up suffering, along with the fans.”
