Charlton boss Lee Bowyer: Tom Lockyer felt Championship stay boosted his international prospects

Charlton manager Lee Bowyer has reiterated he did not want to lose Tom Lockyer.

The Wales international, penned a three-year deal at Luton Town on Tuesday. And the Addicks don’t get a penny as Lockyer was able to activate a relegation release clause.

Bowyer had snapped the centre-back up on a free transfer from Bristol Rovers last summer.

Speaking on Monday, Bowyer said: “Tom did well for us – I’d much rather he be here than going somewhere else.

“He was one of our most steady players throughout the season. He made the odd mistake – but they all did.

“He is another one who feels he’s a Championship player and that he needs to be at a higher level to get in the Wales squad for next summer. By playing in the Championship he feels that will help that happen.”

Luton boss Nathan Jones said: “The number of games he’s played for a 25-year-old is excellent, so he brings good experience. He ticks all the boxes for us.”
