Charlton boss Nathan Jones refusing to get carried away after Addicks climb within point of top-six following 2-0 win over Bristol Rovers
Charlton Athletic manager Nathan Jones says he’s not getting carried away with his side’s run of form as they climbed to within a point of the top six with a 2-0 win over Bristol Rovers.
It’s now six wins in eight and just one defeat in 10 for the South Londoners – form that has seen then climb to eighth in the League One table, hot on the tails of Leyton Orient in sixth.
The Addicks strolled to a two-goal lead before the break. Matty Godden opened the scoring inside 15 minutes as he pounced on Tyreece Campbell’s shot across the face of goal to steer home his 10th of the campaign.
And Josh Edwards drilled in from the edge of the area to open his account for the club nine minutes before the interval.
Asked about the remarkable change to the play-off picture, Jones answered: “It’s not remarkable. We’ve one defeat in eight and we’ve won six, drawn one. We’ve taken 19 from 24 points.
“That’s why it’s happened. We always say it’s a long season. When you go through your troughs and you have a tough spell like we did in the away game [at Rotherham], you’ve also got to realise it’s a 46-game season.
“Nothing’s won in October, nothing’s won in November, September, December, January. Nothing is won. It’s where you finish in May.
“We’re not getting carried away. Now we’re in good form. We weren’t getting too down when we weren’t in the best form.
“What you’ve got to do is back your work, keep working hard, keep doing the right things. We’ve got a really good platform here. That’s the 12th clean sheet in the league, 15th in the whole season. Considering there’s only five in the whole last season, it shows that we’ve improved considerably.”
Following the last minute frenzy during the win over Shrewsbury at the weekend, this evening’s triumph felt much more comfortable.
Jones added: “They’re never comfortable. They might look like it, but they’re never comfortable. Because you’re always thinking if they get one, if you switch off and they get one.
“We had to do the basics really, really well. But that’s what we did. It always helps to get the first goal because we’re very good when we get the first goal.
“We wanted to kick on, wanted to get another one second half and we almost did immediately. But we saw the game out really, really well and I thought it was a top performance.
“Out of possession, fantastic, another clean sheet. We were really good going forward. Could have been a bit more fluent in-between the thirds. But sometimes you can’t.
“We could have scored more tonight. The keeper’s made a lot of good saves. We’ve missed one or two chances.
“But we looked a threat all night and we looked very secure at the other end.”
