Charlton boss Nigel Adkins set for future talks with his players from Tuesday

Nigel Adkins is set to hold talks with his Charlton Athletic squad over their futures from Tuesday – and has hinted news on their released list is set to be announced by the end of the week.

The Addicks finished seventh in League One after a 1-0 victory over Hull City this afternoon, only missing out on the play-offs on goal difference to Oxford United.

Charlton have a number of their squad heading into the final months of their contracts as well as five loanees heading back to their parent clubs.

Asked when those discussions start to take place, Adkins replied: “Tuesday all the players are back in. They’ll have tomorrow off. Through the course of the week there will be conversations, they know that. People need to know where they stand and what is happening.

“I’ll have conversations with the players before anyone else. By the end of the week you [the media] should have more idea, because I know you’ll all be thinking ‘who is on the retained list and who isn’t on the retained list?’ Now is not the day for that conversation.

“The lads have given everything, you can see that. Now we know what division we are in and now we’ve got to work as a football club – the owner and the recruitment side of it – to put a team together and then challenge in the snakes and ladders of the Football League, the emotions and the ups and downs, to see if we can put ourselves in a position where Hull City are standing now with the Championship trophy.

“The recruitment department now will play a big part in what we do, along with the owner.”

Preston North end loanee Jayden Stockley has already stated he would like to stay with Charlton.

Asked about his comments, Adkins replied: “He’s a Preston North End player, he has got another year on his contract.

“I want to thank all the players we’ve had on loan, they have been great. We have got players who are coming out of contract and in contract. What we have to do now is utilise this time to think carefully on how we’re looking to put a team together for next season so that we can be challenging at the top end ourselves and get promoted.”
