Charlton defender gets chance to add to record haul of international caps

BY MAX HALL

Charlton’s Wales centurion Chris Gunter has the opportunity to add to his record haul of 102 caps after being named in manager Robert Page’s squad for three September internationals.

The 32-year-old full-back has been named in the squad alongside Chelsea defender Ethan Ampadu, Fulham new boy Harry Wilson and QPR midfielder George Thomas.

Gunter won his 102nd cap in Wales’ 1-0 defeat to Italy in Rome in their Euro 2020 finals campaign.

Gunter has played every minute for Charlton in their 2021-22 campaign – including the EFL Cup. He has slotted in at left-back to cover the injured Ben Purrington (ankle).

Wales will take on European Championship finalists Finland in a friendly in Helsinki on Wednesday, September 1 before visiting Belarus in a World Cup qualifier on Sunday 5 and hosting Estonia at the Cardiff City Stadium in another World Cup fixture, on Wednesday, September 8.
