Charlton ‘naive’ as they are punished for being ‘wasteful’ in FA Youth Cup defeat to Newcastle United

Charlton Athletic are out of the FA Youth Cup after a 3-2 defeat to Newcastle at The Valley last night.

The Addicks fought back from Ben Parkinson putting the Toon into a 14th minute lead in SE7.

Daniel Kanu levelled the tie shortly before half-time and then went ahead in the 51st minute through Charlton captain Toby Bower, quickest to react after Newcastle keeper Aidan Harris parried Patrick Casey’s attempt.

Ben Parkinson quickly levelled and Johnny Emerson put the visitors ahead for the second time on the evening.

Ralfi Hand’s inswinging corner struck the post in stoppage time.

U18 manager Danny Senda said: “We were wasteful in key areas. We were naive in the few opportunities we gave them and you only need a few opportunities. That’s a big lesson for some of our young players tonight.

“It is all well and good dominating the game but they come out winning the game.

“It’s a difficult one to take but we’ll go away, we’ll analyse and look at the individual performances.

“I just said to them in there, some of these boys have made the step up to the first team in recent weeks – you just cannot afford to make the mistakes we made tonight. Those mistakes need to be eradicated if they are going to have the opportunity  – the ultimate goal – of becoming a professional footballer.”
