Charlton owner on the priority area of pitch he wanted to strengthen in last transfer window

Thomas Sandgaard has revealed that Charlton Athletic’s priority in the summer transfer window was bolstering their midfield.

The Addicks owner flew into the UK this week and will be at today’s League One home game against Cheltenham Town.

The South London club paid transfer fees for Charlie Kirk and Samuel Lavelle, who arrived from Crewe and Morecambe respectively.

Goalkeeper Stephen Henderson, a free agent following his release by Crystal Palace, became their 13th signing of the window when he agreed a one-year contract earlier this week.

“Our transfer strategy has been about being sensible and building something sustainable,” Sandgaard told Charlton Athletic’s matchday programme. “I’m really pleased we’ve been able to sign six new players to multi-year contracts.

“We’ve managed to bring in young, talented improving players and complemented them with experienced professionals who will not only help the team on the pitch but also help the development of their team-mates off the pitch.

“What was most important for me, from last season, was to strengthen our midfield, to make it more attacking. We now have a very competitive midfield.

“The proof is in the pudding but, as far as I can tell, we will be playing exciting football and creating chances.”
