Charlton sixth for set-piece goals in League One this season – former Palace man gives them extra deadball threat
Charlton Athletic are joint sixth for the most set-piece goals in League One this season – and surely would be even higher if Ryan Inniss had been available the whole of the season.
The former Crystal Palace centre-back is a huge threat from deadball deliveries and had already cleanly won one header before he nodded the Addicks ahead in Saturday’s 3-2 win over AFC Wimbledon.
Akin Famewo also converted an Albie Morgan corner to ensure Charlton took maximum points.
AFC Wimbledon – third for set-piece goals (14) – struggled all afternoon when the Addicks were able to bring their centre-backs forward.
Rotherham lead the way with 17 set-piece goals with Fleetwood second on 16. Wycombe are fourth with 13.
Jackson was in charge of devising attacking set-pieces under Lee Bowyer and Nigel Adkins. Now he has input from first-team coaches Jason Euell and Terry Skiverton, along with goalkeeping coach Glyn Shimell.
“As far as the offensive side, we have got a general set-up which has been effective and worked for a long time, so we just tweak that according to the opposition,” Jackson told the South London Press. “I give the coaches the freedom to come up with some stuff for us and they work hard and do a lot of homework.
“Saturday we scored a couple and conceded a couple as well. We want to be a real threat. When you have got Ryan Inniss in the team you don’t have to over-complicate, you just need to get the deliveries into good areas and for someone to go and attack it – it doesn’t have to be rocket science.
“But we want to be tighter than we have been in the last game. Generally we have been pretty solid defensively but we also can’t allow Saturday to happen again.”
