Charlton striker Alfie May’s league goal total for 2023 more than Liverpool’s Salah – only City machine Haaland trumps him

Alfie May scored his 15th goal of the season in Charlton’s 3-0 EFL Trophy win on Tuesday night – taking his scoring tally to 31 for 2023.

The Addicks still have nine matches to play before the new year and May’s current haul is the most one of their players has scored in all competitions at this stage of the season since Derek Hales, who had 18 in the 1976-77 campaign.

May, 30, won League One’s Player of the Month for October after bagging seven goals in six matches.

The former Cheltenham Town marksman has scored more league goals (27) in 2023 than Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah (22) with only Manchester City’s Erling Haaland (28) ahead of him.

May told the South London Press Football Pod recently that nerves affected his early matches for the Addicks. Asked about his scoring return, he responded: “I’d put it down to being a little bit nervous and probably expectations to come in and score goals.

“The first four or five games I didn’t score. I probably went back to how I was at Cheltenham – thinking I’m going to be the best player on the pitch and believing in myself again.

“It’s probably down to me as a person to take it on. It’s my fault I haven’t been scoring, so I need to start doing something about it. I relaxed a bit.

“Signing for a club like Charlton, I probably pushed that to the side and went ‘you know what? I’m playing a game of footbal. I want to score goals, so go back to what got me success before.”
