Charlton striker Lyle Taylor says the Addicks have stopper Dillon Phillips to thank for away win at Plymouth
Charlton striker Lyle Taylor says that he and his teammates are indebted to goalkeeper Dillon Phillips after his penalty save sent the Addicks on the way to three points at Plymouth.
The South Londoners had been second-best during the opening stages at Home Park and looked set to fall behind as Argyle were awarded a penalty shortly before half-time.
But Graham Carey’s spot-kick was repelled by Phillips and to rub salt into the Pilgrims’ wounds, Taylor headed the out of sorts Addicks ahead just 98 seconds later.
“It galvanises the team, a save like that,” explained Taylor, who bagged his 19thgoal of the season in Devon.
“The fact that Dill pulled us out the proverbial was brilliant. We’ve got Dill to thank for these three points because it could have been so different going 1-0 down whilst being dominated. We’ll thank Dill for that and we’ll go again Tuesday (at Wycombe).
“For half-an-hour, if I’m completely honest with you, we got battered. We were expecting [Plymouth] to be good, we just could not impose ourselves on the game. Then you get the goal against the run of play after Dills saves a penalty and (Freddie) Ladapo misses an open goal from a knock-down from a corner. At that point you think this might be our day. We hung in there when we had to and the defending was brilliant.”
The South Londoners are still firmly encamped within League One’s play-off places but Barnsley’s defeat at Burton Albion means Lee Bowyer’s side only sit six points shy of the automatic promotion places – although they will be wary of third-placed Sunderland who are four points ahead and have two games in-hand.
Taylor says the outside chance of nicking a top-two place won’t change the way he approaches the final six league games of the campaign.
“For me, simply it’s about winning every game,” he said.
“Every season you want to win every single game. You can’t, but you want to win every single game. We’ll rest now and go again Tuesday. Bows said beforehand, if we have a really good week here, who knows where we’ll be at the end of it. That’s the aim now. Eighteen points. If we can get eighteen points then who knows. It’s going to be difficult. We’ll keep working hard, that’s all we can do. Keep trying our very best to win the games.”
