Charlton striker ruled out for up to a month – with midfielder a doubt for Shrewsbury match

BY RICHARD CAWLEY

Paul Smyth is out of Charlton’s trip to Shrewsbury tomorrow – with Andrew Shinnie also rated a doubt.

Striker Smyth needed five stitches in a gash on his left knee suffered at Ipswich last weekend and sat out Wednesday’s 1-0 loss to Milton Keynes at The Valley.

Shinnie came off with a thigh problem as the Addicks lost in SE7 in the league for the first time since September 19.

“Shinnie will struggle for Saturday – he went into the game a bit tight,” said Charlton boss Lee Bowyer. “Smyth’s gash had to be reopened so that it could all be cleaned out. They had to redo it.

“We’re talking maybe three or four weeks before he is back. He is a QPR player, they want it all done properly.”

Jake Forster-Caskey could be back in the Charlton squad after training on Thursday while Ian Maatsen has served his one-match ban.

Dylan Levitt and Deji Oshilaja will be reassessed on Monday to see if they can resume training – being forced to self-isolate after the former’s positive Covid-19 test.
