Charlton’s Chris Gunter wins 102nd cap as Wales qualify for knockout stages of European Championships

Charlton Athletic defender Chris Gunter helped Wales reach the last 16 of the European Championships yesterday.

The 31-year-old started in the 1-0 defeat to Italy in Rome as he won his 102nd cap for his country.

And Gunter went close to a first ever goal at international level, his near-post header from a corner narrowly whistling wide of the target.

Wales finished second in Group A and will be back in action on Saturday as they face Group B’s runners-up.

Addicks manager Nigel Adkins has revealed recently that Gunter will not look to have a break this summer as he wants to be ready for the resumption of club football in August.

Gunter made 36 appearances for Charlton last season. He joined in October after being released by Reading.
