Charlton’s Conor Washington bidding to book Euro 2020 place with Northern Ireland
Conor Washington could be celebrating tonight – with the Charlton striker hoping to play his part in Northern Ireland clinching their spot at next summer’s delayed Euro 2020.
Ireland host Slovakia at Windsor Park and victory would put them into the finals.
The competition has been moved due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Washington has scored five goals for the Addicks since a close-season switch from Hearts.
Ireland follow up with Nations League matches against Austria and Romania on Sunday and Wednesday.
Washington has scored four times at international level in 21 matches.
“This is the most important game for Conor and hopefully it goes well,” said Charlton manager Lee Bowyer. “I want him to be injury-free, that’s important from a selfish point of view.
“But I hope they get through and it gives him something to look forward to in the summer.
“He’s got five goals for us and he is bedding in well. He has had chances and he has taken them well. He works his socks off.
“He’s fitted in out wide on a couple of occasions and dropped into the number 10 position as well. He’s versatile, which helps. But most important when he gets chances he has taken them.
“I’m really pleased with what he has brought to us so far.”
