Chelsea keeper set to be axed after Champions League errors

Emma Hayes is prepared to drop her number one goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger for Sunday’s WSL match against Leicester City.

Berger made two costly errors while centre-back Jess Carter gifted the Germans with a sloppy backpass that allowed Wolfsburg to capitalise and score three goals on Wednesday night in the Champions League group match at Kingsmeadow.

Chelsea drew 3-3 in a game where they took the lead through Sam Kerr before conceding three.

They managed to spare their blushes with a thumper from Beth England before Pernille Harder snatched a late, late equaliser.

Hayes said: “We had dominance in most areas of the pitch and yet we are only walking away with a point.

“It’s important to remember that going forward the team is making progress. We carved them open at times but we can’t give gifts and we have to eliminate giving gifts to the opponent.”

That controlled response won’t mask the ruthless decision-making ability of the head coach and Swede Zecira Musovic is expected to be between the sticks to face bottom of the league Leicester.

Hayes will expect her charges to score a few goals, but is not disregarding the newly-promoted East Midlands outfit.

She said: They are getting better, game by game.”

Fran Kirby had a slight cold and could only start on the bench, but is expected to return to the starting 11. England will make way.

Abraham who was dumped by head coach Thomas Tuchel when the German arrived at the Bridge, said: “I had an ambition and a goal that I set myself and it was to go out there and be the best I can be, to prove to everyone my true abilities.

“The easy option would’ve been to stick around and sit down. Chelsea’s a massive club, they will compete and try to win trophies, so the easy option would’ve been to do that.

“I realised that I needed to go out and prove myself. I took a decision and it was the right one.

“I spoke to Jose. He had a goal. I could see where he wanted Roma to go, and see where he wants to take them and I wanted to be part of the process. He really put his trust in me so he was a big impact on the reason why I chose Roma.

“I picked up the phone and he was like: ‘Do you want to enjoy some sun or stay in the rain?’

“I have learned so much tactically – as much as I have in my entire lifetime. It is good. You need to learn off different managers. Right now, I am learning a lot.”
