Chris Gunter set to miss AFC Wimbledon’s games against Barrow and Walsall to join Wales’ backroom staff

Chris Gunter is set to miss AFC Wimbledon’s League Two fixtures against Barrow and Walsall after agreeing to join Robert Page’s Wales coaching staff.

The Sun are reporting that the 33-year-old, who retired from international football, has held talks with Page over taking up a position within the backroom team.

Gunter has 109 Wales appearances to his name and also holds Uefa A and B coaching badges.

The defender will miss the next two fixtures for Johnnie Jackson’s side as a result of joining Wales’ coaching set-up.

AFC Wimbledon are short of options due to their injury crisis, with Johnnie Jackson being forced to recall youngsters from loan spells to fill his bench in recent weeks.

Gunter missed a chunk of the season already after he was named in the Wales squad for the winter World Cup in Qatar.

The former Charlton defender has made 32 appearances this season for the Dons in all competitions.

He is out of contract in the summer.

Wimbledon have only won once in 2023.
