Croydon Harriers’ top-five ambitions ended by absence of key runners

Croydon Harriers high hopes of a top-five team spot in the South of the Thames 7.5 miles cross country championships were dashed by the non-availability of two potential top scorers, writes Mike Fleet.

In the circumstances a turnout of 19 runners, both men and women, ran extremely well and were rewarded with a ninth-place finish out of 17 clubs.

Douglas Aikman headed the Croydon Harriers challenge, completing the three testing laps in 47:04.

David Brown finished next, 73rd in 49:14. Ashley George (50:02) and Adam Shew (50:13) took 82nd and 86th respectively.

The ever-consistent Madeleine Armstrong-Pleith was the first female Harrier home in 15th (147th overall), clocking 55.30. Laura Marshall 51:50 was next home in 34th (210th overall).
