Croydon Women defeat Sutton United Reserves

It was a return to winning ways for Croydon Women on Sunday as they secured a narrow 1-0 victory over local rivals Sutton United Reserves in the league, writes Emma Bowell.

Back at Croydon Sports Arena for their only home match in October, Croydon were boosted by the return of Carina de Souza Goncalves and Dee Badley, both coming back from injury.

The Trams were frustrated for the first-half though and could not penetrate a stubborn Sutton defence. Sutton, similarly, could not break through, even with a string of corners – one of which prompted a goal-line clearance from Kacie Nadison-Singh.

Croydon came out re-energised in the second-half, and continued to threaten the Sutton goal. Eventually the deadlock was broken by Megan Perkins, who was able to convert at close range from a goalkeeping error and give Croydon the lead.

With Croydon strengthened by the momentum of the goal and Sutton trying to get back into the game, both sides continued to have chances but were unable to add to the scoreline.

Croydon’s 1-0 victory puts them fourth in the table, albeit with two games in hand on Epsom & Ewell who are top.

The Trams are away to Beecholme Belles this weekend before making a return to Croydon Arena – and to cup action – when they take on Leatherhead on November 5.
