Croydon Women suffer defeat against Leatherhead

BY JASON CASEY

After the euphoria of the previous week, the Trams came down to earth with a bump against old foe Leatherhead. The scoreline flattered the trams who defended in numbers against a well-organised Leatherhead side who are aiming to bounce back into tier 6.

Aptly the bogey team wore green with Croydon back in their familiar blue kit.

With three key fast and creative players all missing it was little surprise that Croydon had difficulty unlocking the Leatherhead high-pressure tactic

The first half was a pretty even affair. Sarah Nicholson had a shot saved by the Leatherhead goalkeeper after a run from the left. Kacie Nadison-Singh had a couple of speculative long-range attempts that the Leatherhead goalkeeper handled with ease. At the other end of the pitch, Leatherhead missed a good chance following some good work down the right wing from their busy number 11 but the cross was blasted wide.

The second half was one-way traffic, with Leatherhead dominating possession. Croydon couldn’t seem to get out of their half for long periods of the game. Emmy Blyth held a number of shots that were on target.

With 10 minutes remaining, Croydon were looking to somehow snatch a draw. Sadly, that wasn’t to be the case as Leatherhead scored a good goal, their number 10 launching a powerful shot from outside of the penalty box.

The Croydon defence did their best on the day but Leatherhead were worthy winners.
