Crystal Palace academy coach taking on Chelsea role

BY MATT WOOSNAM

Crystal Palace’s academy has been dealt another blow by the departure of long-serving coach Jack Mesure, who is set to join Chelsea.

Mesure is in charge of Palace’s U16 side but has unofficially been Richard Shaw’s assistant with the U23s following the promotion of Dave Reddington to the first-team after Steven Reid’s departure.

The coach has been with the club for almost 10 years, and was seen by many as having a similar style to former youth team and first-team coach Ben Garner, who brought him to Palace.

Mesure, 30, began his coaching career at Sutton United, taking charge of their U8 and reserve teams, having previously spent time as a youth team player at the non-league club.

He has now been headhunted by Chelsea and will move to west London to join the Blues as U15 coach, leaving Palace with vacancies at both U16 boss and U23 assistant manager, with Rob Quinn currently taking charge of both the U15s and U16s.

Mesure joins Steve Higham in departing the Eagles’ academy for a top Premier League side in recent months, after the latter joined Manchester United.

Palace have been drawn away to Middlesbrough in the EFL Cup. The game takes place on October 30 (7.45pm).
