Crystal Palace boss reacts to Cheick Doucoure’s red card against Aston Villa

Patrick Vieira believes that Cheick Doucoure will learn from his sending off in Crystal Palace’s 1-0 defeat at Aston Villa.

The Mali international, who started alongside Albert Sambi Lokonga at Villa Park, was handed his first yellow by Craig Pawson in the 57th minute for a challenge on Boubacar Kamara.

Doucoure was then issued with his second yellow five minutes later – this time for a challenge on Callum Chambers – and sent off.

The 23-year-old has now been issued with 10 yellow cards in his debut Premier League campaign.

“It’s disappointing and he’s frustrated about it,” said Vieira of the former Lens midfielder.

“It’s not easy to leave your team with 10 men.

“The 10 players did well – we worked hard and tried to create those chances to get back into the game.

“But it was really difficult for us today.

“He will learn from that incident. When you are a midfielder, sometimes you go into those challenges. He was a little bit late this time and got the red card.”

James McArthur, who has missed the whole season with a hip injury, made his first appearance of this campaign in the 81st minute after he replaced Arsenal loanee Lokonga.

“It wasn’t easy for him to come back when we were down to 10 men,” said Vieira.

“But it was important for him to have the first step in the Premier League after the long injuries that he had.

“It’s always good to see him back in the squad.”
