Crystal Palace defender comes back into starting line-up as England reach Euro 2024 final
England have reached the final of the Euro 2024 after Ollie Watkins netted late on in their 2-1 semi final win over Holland.
Ex-Crystal Palace captain Gareth Southgate will now lead out theThree Lions will face Spain in the Euro 2024 final in Berlin on Sunday – the second major final under his tenure.
England went behind early in Dortmund on Wednesday evening when Xavi Simmons robbed Declan Rice and arrowed a shot beyond Jordan Pickford after seven minutes.
They equalised in the 18th minute after England were awarded a spot kick following Denzel Dumfries’ foul on Harry Kane.
Bayern Munich striker Kane duly slotted the penalty past Brighton stopper Bart Verbruggen to bring the scoreline level.
Southgate subbed on Cole Palmer and Ollie Watkins, with the duo combining for the winner in the 90th minute.
Chelsea man Palmer threaded through Aston Villa striker Watkins to fire England into their first final on foreign soil a the 1966 World Cup final and the Euro 2020 finals were played at Wembley.
It has been 58 years since England last won a major tournament, with the Euro 2020 final ending in penalty heartbreak to Italy.
Palace defender Guehi came back into the starting line-up after returning from suspension and kept the Dutch quiet for the majority of the evening.
The 23-year-old Lewisham-raised defender is now set to play in his first major tournament final.
Former Charlton defender Ezri Konas came on in the final moments after Watkins netted the winner.
Spain have won their last three major finals, twice at the European Championship – 2008 and 2012 – and one World Cup final victory in 2010.
“I took the job to try to improve English football and we’re now in a second final. The last one was the first in over 50 years. We’re now in a first one overseas,” said Southgate.

“We’re giving people amazing nights. We’ve given our supporters some of the best nights in the last 50 years. I’m hugely proud of that.
“I’m delighted if everyone at home is feeling the way we are and the way those in the stadium were. But we’re not finished.
“We’ve got the greatest possible test to prepare for. We came here to try to win the tournament and that’s still our aim.”
Southgate was targeted with plastic cups by supporters following the goalless draw with Slovenia.
He added: “We all want to be loved, right? When you’re doing something for your country, you’re a proud Englishman – you don’t feel that back and all you read is criticism – it’s hard.
“To be able to celebrate a second final is very special. If I had not been on the grass, I would have been watching and celebrating like [the fans] were.
“I’m the one that has to pick a team so to be able to give them a night like tonight was very special.
“We have come here to win and play the team who have been the best in the tournament [in the final]. But we’re still here and fighting.”
