Crystal Palace defender is not part of England’s World Cup squad

Marc Guehi’s World Cup dream is over after England boss Gareth Southgate did not name him in his 26-man squad.

The only players in the travelling party with links to South London are Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher, who has previously had loans with Crystal Palace and Charlton Athletic, and Harry Kane, who had a temporary spell with Millwall while a Tottenham youngster.

Guehi has been capped three times by the Three Lions.

Former Eagles defender Gareth Southgate named Harry Maguire, John Stones, Conor Coady, Eric Dier, Ben White, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Luke Shaw, Kieran Trippier and Kyle Walker as his backline options.

Southgate said: “My priority on these days is the difficult conversations and sad news. That is really tough. There are not many situations harder than that, maybe releasing a young player at the early stages of their career.

‘The nature of those conversations, good and bad, remind you of how much it means to a player to go to a World Cup. I’m very conscious of that. It is a great day but for some I’ve had to disappoint them.”
