Crystal Palace duo make France’s provisional Olympic squad

Crystal Palace duo Jean-Philippe Mateta and Michael Olise have both been named in France’s provisional squad for this summer’s Olympic Games.

Ex-Manchester City and Chelsea youngster Olise, who also qualifies to play for Algeria, Nigeria and England, recorded 16 goal contributions in 19 Premier League outings last season.

Mateta has recorded 24 goal contributions this season across all competitions, becoming the first Palace player since promotion in 2013 to record that accolade.

The ex-Mainz striker, 26, has been selected as one of the three over 23 players included in the squad. He last represented his country in June 2019, having been called up by France at U19 and U21 level.

Olise played for France’s U21 side at last summer’s European Championship, where he suffered a grade three hamstring tear.

Host country France – managed by Thierry Henry – have been drawn in Group A alongside the USA, New Zealand and Guinea.

The tournament will take place from July 24 to August 10, with main host city Paris, Bordeaux, Marseille and Nice all selected to hold games.
