Crystal Palace keeper suffers league and international injury blow

Crystal Palace goalkeeper Sam Johnstone will miss the rest of the Premier League campaign and be ruled out of this summer’s European Championships after requiring elbow surgery on an injury he picked up during international duty.

Johnstone was set to start for the Three Lions in Tuesday night’s international friendly against Belgium but was replaced by Burnley stopper James Trafford on Sunday after picking up the injury in training.

The 31-year-old has been a recent mainstay in Gareth Southgate’s England squad and has started every game under Oliver Glasner since he took over at Crystal Palace.

Former West Brom keeper Johnstone will now miss the rest of the season, with Dean Henderson assuming the role of number one for this weekend’s trip to Nottingham Forest.

Henderson joined Palace from Manchester United in the summer and will now get the chance to impress Glasner in the final 10 games of the season.

Palace are eight points clear of 18th-placed Forest, who were recently handed a four-point deduction for financial rule breaches.
