‘Dangerous’ Bromley please boss Andy Woodman as they brush Oldham Athletic aside

Andy Woodman praised his “dangerous” Bromley team after they beat Oldham Athletic 3-0 at Hayes Lane on Saturday afternoon.

The Ravens defeated the Latics comfortably to move up to fifth in the National League.

Bromley started the game on the front foot and controlled the early possession and got their rewards when Omar Sowunmi pounced on the ball in the six-yard area and buried his strike into the back of the net.

There were just two minutes left before half time when Jude Arthurs’ excellent work down the right-hand side resulted in a looping cross with Reece Hannam there at the back post to rifle home.

Oldham never really looked like a side who would end the Ravens unbeaten run at Hayes Lane this season and were punished again when Billy Bingham’s corner came off a Latics shirt to give Bromley a third and seal all three points.

That result means the South London club have now won their past five fixtures at home and still haven’t been defeated in their own back yard in the 2022-23 campaign.

Woodman told the South London Press: “We were good value for it. I don’t want to be disrespectful to Oldham, in any way shape or form, but we really looked like a team that is dangerous.

“We went about our business really well so I was chuffed to bits. They were going to have a knee-jerk reaction [to having a new manager], it’s too early for David [Unsworth], it’s as hard for him as it is for us to prepare.

“But on the day sometimes they can get the [new manager] bounce and it catches you out – but today my guys were powerful all over the pitch.”

Saturday was Non-League Day – football fans across the country encouraged to get down to watch their local team play during the international break.

Woodman said: “I hope we’ve given a good account of what we’re about here. There might have been people that have never come to one of our games before. But I’m hoping they are going to go away thinking ‘that management team and the players are going about their stuff really well and it’s exciting football’ that’s really important.”

Reece Hannam and Jude Arthurs worked hard all afternoon to get down the wings to create an overload on both sides and the Ravens boss was pleased with their performances.

The 51 year-old continued: “That’s the big thing, you’ve spotted that really well, that’s the important thing not to just have the wide men out there, we want people overlapping and underlapping.

“We’ve worked really hard on that and it’s all going in the right direction but it’s still very early days.”

Harry Forster and Adam Marriott were not in the matchday squad and Woodman gave an update on the duo and spoke about the latter’s quality in front of goal.

The former Crystal Palace goalkeeper added: “We’ll wait and see [what the injuries are]. I don’t think they will be too long, the boys that have come in have shown what a strong squad we’ve got.

“Adam is a goalscorer, we wanted to take a bit of pressure off Michael Cheek. I’m sure Cheeky would like to get 20 goals on his own every year but we need to have other goals where other people chip in so that’s what Adam has brought to the team.”
