Danny McNamara: ‘Millwall will give play-off push a right go’

Danny McNamara says that Millwall will give the push to make the Championship play-offs a “right go” after the defender scored his first goals for the Lions in the 4-1 against Barnsley at The Den.

The 23-year-old scored a brace on his 50th appearance for the South London club as they ran out 4-1 winners in SE16 on Saturday afternoon.

McNamara said: “It was a special moment for me, and the players were buzzing for me as well. They’ve been on at me – when am I ever going to get my first goal? Am I ever going to score? But it was a special moment, and it was even better doing it in front of the fans.

“I was delighted to get my first goal for Millwall. I didn’t realise I was going to get a second one, but I’ll take it, and I’m just delighted to get my first goal in front of the Millwall fans as well.

“It was the cherry on top [marking his 50th Millwall appearance with a goal]. I’m just delighted to get on the scoresheet. The gaffer has been on at me about making the back stick – Paul Robinson as well, and I’ve been working on it.

“It was off my left foot into the near corner, but it was a bit of a scruffy goal, but they all count. They’ve been on at me about getting to the back stick. Scotty Malone put a great ball in, and I was there to finish it. It was a great moment for me.

“It would be really nice [to make the play-offs], but we’re just going to take every game as they come and get as many points as we can and see where that puts us – we’ll give it a right go.

“I didn’t really think about it being my 50th appearance – I was just concentrating on the game, and getting two goals was a special moment.

“I was used to playing in a back four and played in a back five and playing really high [at St Johnstone]. I just learnt it really well – every game. I’m still learning it now, and it’s something I want to add to my game, goals and assists.”
