Dean Holden: We’ve not had as many chances as we should have during defeat at Bristol Rovers

Charlton boss Dean Holden admitted his side didn’t create as much as he’d hoped during today’s 1-0 loss at Bristol Rovers.

The Gas claimed a first home league win since New Year’s Day thanks to John Marquis’ penalty kick inside the final 20 minutes. Addicks skipper George Dobson had been penalised for handball.

Holden’s men, who were undefeated in five before this afternoon, enjoyed the majority of possession in the first period but were unable to carve open too many opportunities.

Chances did start to come late on but Daniel Kanu, Miles Leaburn and Macauley Bonne were all unable to convert from inside the area.

Holden said: “I’m disappointed that our winning run has come to an end. A draw was probably a fair result. Ash [Maynard-Brewer] has had one big save to make in the first half. Other than that he’s not had a lot to do. We’ve not had loads of chances, not as many as we’d have liked considering the amount of times we got in the final-third.

“We’ve had gilt-edged chances. Ryan [Inniss’] header from the six-yard box, Miles [Leaburn’s] one at the end, knocked down and cleared off the line. Daniel Kanu got in on goal, Macauley Bonne on the six-yard line. We’ve had moments but we’ve just not been able to stick it in the net. We’ve not been as clinical as they’ve been.

“They gave us a lot of respect with their team selection. They left out, in my opinion, the best player they’ve got in Collins to stiffen up the midfield to stop us dictating in there. We weren’t able to get our wide players into the game as much as we’ve done in recent weeks and found it difficult to break them down.

“You have to find different ways. The chances have all come from crosses. If you’re watching us as an opposition scout, the way we’ve been playing in recent weeks, it’s obvious where our key men are in the team. They’ve locked us up today. We’ve found it difficult to maintain those waves of attack to create enough chances to win the game.

“We’ve had decent chances just not enough of them. Certainly not that we’ve had in recent weeks. We’ve lost to a penalty. No arguments about that, the rule as it is. His arm is outstretched, and we’ve got no complaints. If we come away with a point, we think Okay and move forward. We just have to make sure now we go on another winning run.”
