Did Gary Rowett take extra satisfaction from beating Steve Morison’s Cardiff? Millwall boss has his say
Millwall manager Gary Rowett took no extra satisfaction from making Steve Morison’s Den return a losing one.
Murray Wallace and Mason Bennett scored for the Lions to inflict defeat on Morison’s Cardiff City side.
It was Morison’s first time back in SE16 as the opposition.
“Not really – I don’t really know Steve,” said Rowett, when asked if beating the former Millwall striker made the win that bit sweeter. “He’s focused on Cardiff and focused, I’m sure, getting the job full time. He has done a really good job to be where they were and to have a really good transfer window.
“You have seen the results improve off the back of it. They are a really hard side to play against and sometimes that can stop you getting into trouble.”
“We want to win games of football and I don’t care who it is against. I was pleased today because for 89 minutes, on the whole, we were the team in control. You’ve got to go and score off the back of that control. Thankfully we did.”
Millwall have lost just one of their last nine Championship matches at The Den. Saturday’s result made it three wins in their last four fixtures there.
Rowett said: “Our home form has been excellent. If you take out the Forest game, which could’ve gone either way, we’ve not lost too many.
“Our biggest challenge has been our away form. Our away form has been poor. I can think, without naming them, of three or four games and results which have really been disappointing away from home.
“Sometimes that’s the difference. The Championship is a tough league and you look at all the teams clambering to try and get away from the bottom areas. If someone would have said that we are 20 points off the bottom three and maybe seven or eight off the top [six] then we wouldn’t be overly disappointed.
“But because of recent results, I think we are. We’ve got to do something about it and show a bit of spirit, like we did today, and start winning some games to start climbing the league again.”
