Does Patrick Vieira think James McArthur will play this season? Palace boss answers that question
Crystal Palace boss Patrick Vieira is hoping that James McArthur will feature this season.
The Scottish midfielder has been missing since the start of the 2022-23 campaign after suffering a long-term hip injury.
During pre-season, McArthur, 35, featured in the 3-2 win against Gillingham and also managed 45 minutes in the 3-0 win against QPR.
McArthur travelled with the team to Turkey for the World Cup break and continued with his rehab as Vieira’s side took on Trabzonspor and Napoli in friendlies.
In the broadcast section of his press conference ahead of Newcastle United on Saturday, Vieira said: “Nathan [Ferguson] started training with the team.
“For Macca [James McArthur], it will be next week until he can get a little bit more involved. For both players, we are still a couple of weeks away before thinking about them getting involved.”
When asked if Palace fans could expect to see McArthur this season, Vieira added: “I hope for him.
“He is doing everything to get back on the field. We will support and help him.
“If there is a small chance or a big chance, we will take it.”
The 32-time Scotland international has played 249 times for the Eagles since joining from Wigan Athletic in 2014.
McArthur has recorded 19 goals and 23 assists in all competitions during his time at Selhurst Park.
“He is a big miss for us,” added Vieira.
“It’s not just about what he has been doing on the field, but his personality, his presence, and the way he communicates with everyone on the field and in the dressing room [is a miss].”
