Dons boss delivers early verdict on Leicester City loanee

AFC Wimbledon boss Johnnie Jackson admitted that Kasey McAteer was unlucky not to start yesterday’s goalless draw at Northampton Town.

The 21-year-old Leicester City loanee MacAtee joined the Dons on deadline day and made his first start in the 0-0 draw with Carlise United, coming on for the final five minutes of the game.

McAteer was also brought on yesterday at the Sixfileds Satidum, replacing Ethan Chislett for the final eight minutes plus stoppage time as the Dons secured a point against the automatic promotion hopefuls.

“He’s been fantastic since he has come in,” Jackson told the South London Press.

“He was unlucky not to start tonight on the back of the impact he had on Saturday.

“But I have got strong options in there. With Armani Little, Alex Woodyard and Ethan Chislett playing tonight, they’re strong lads that he’s up against.

“Harry Pell missed out tonight, so you can see that there is competition for places. If your performance levels dip, someone will be ready to take your place.

“I have said to Kasey that he will get his opportunities from the start, and so will all the other lads. There are so many games to play – we’re going to need all of them.”

Wimbledon recorded their 13th clean sheet of the season against Jon Brady’s Northampton side on Tuesday evening, with keeper Nik Tzanev recording seven saves during the 90 minutes.

“I’m delighted with Nik,” said Jackson.

“The goalkeepers get the plaudits for the clean sheets – and rightly so – but it starts with the front men and the wingers setting the press up.

“If they get through the solid midfield and back four, then they have to get past a goalkeeper in great form.

“He’s coming up with saves and commanding his box when we need him.

“He will be the first to tell you that he’s playing behind a really solid defensive line. But it’s brilliant for Nik that he’s getting the recognition he deserves.”
