Dons boss explains defender’s injury substitution in Fleetwood win

AFC Wimbledon boss Johnnie Jackson confirmed that Ryan Johnson was forced off in the 1-0 win over Fleetwood on Saturday with a groin injury.

Johnson went down in the 16th minute and was immediately taken off.

Isaac Ogundere, who scored the winning penalty in Wednesday night’s EFL Cup victory over Premier League side Ipswich, came on in his place.

Joe Lewis moved into the central centre-back position, with Ogundere being introduced as the left centre-back in a back three.

Wimbledon have a two-week break due to international call-ups. Their next fixture sees them host Milton Keynes at Plough Lane on September 14.

“He felt his groin,” said Jackson.

“We don’t know how bad it is yet. Hopefully, it’s not too bad. We have a couple of weeks to recover, so we will assess it in the next couple of days.

“It’s difficult with that happening at that stage of the game, especially in the backline where you want to be quite settled.

“Isaac came on and did really well. Ryan has played a lot of football in a short space of time – it might be related to that.

“It’s been a tough schedule. We have been quite lucky so far with injuries, but we’re disappointed to lose him today.”
