Dons new boy McCormick: Things we worked on, pressing and defending all worked well

Luke McCormick praised the character of the AFC Wimbledon players after they beat Doncaster Rovers on the opening day of the new season.

The 22-year-old scored on his debut as the Dons ran out 2-1 winners at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Speaking to AFC Wimbledon’s club website, McCormick said: “Brilliant start to the season. It was the start we have all been working towards. We’ve worked really hard in pre-season and I know our results weren’t brilliant but it’s about the process.

“We’ve dug out a brilliant win there and I thought a lot of the things we’ve been working on came out in the game. Our pressing was exceptional in the first half and then we were ruthless enough to take our chances.

“Towards the end, to defend the way we did, the resilience can only set us up for a good season now.

“Ollie Palmer pressed really well today, and he was vital to the first goal. The boys really worked hard to a man. Eeven the subs that came on were brilliant so it’s a great feeling and we just need to move on from this now, park it, and go and get the next three points.

“We’ve been labelled a young team, which can go one or two ways. But I didn’t see anything young mentally today. To see the game out in front of the fans showed brilliant character and it’s just a brilliant feeling.

“It’s the first time I’ve played football with fans for a while, so to have the Wombles cheering our name was brilliant.

“It gives me a proper buzz. That’s why I play football. But we just want to add to the history of this football club and today was a small step towards that.

“It’s three points – send the fans home happy, and we go again.”
