Dons striker Joe Pigott expresses his thoughts after red card forced him off in West Ham tie
Pigott netted inside 77 seconds to put the Dons ahead against their Premier League opposition in the second round of the EFL Cup on Tuesday night, writes Sam Smith.
But manager Neal Ardley was forced to reshuffle his team in the aftermath of McDonald’s 18th-minute dismissal.
Pigott said: “It was really disappointing to come off. The manager had a few good words to say to me as I came off.
“It was the right thing to do for the team. I accepted that. It was tough to watch from the sidelines but I’m proud of how the boys performed. It was a fantastic feeling [to score]. My first impression was that he [goalkeeper Adrian] might have saved it but but I was really happy to get us off to a good start.”
Wimbledon have not won since their opening day victory against Fleetwood, in which Pigott netted the only goal. They face a trip to Burton Albion tomorrow.
“We’ve got enough confidence to turn our league form around,” said Pigott. “We’ve certainly improved as a squad and now it’s just about getting the results.”
