Duncan Watmore set to face old club Sunderland on his Millwall debut

Duncan Watmore is set to make his Millwall debut against his former club Sunderland.

The Black Cats head to The Den this weekend.

Watmore made a permanent move to Millwall on Tuesday after struggling to hold down a Middlesbrough starting spot once Michael Carrick took charge.

The 28-year-old was a highly-rated prospect when he broke on to the first-team scene at Sunderland and won the club’s Young Player of the Year award in 2015-16. He was U21 Premier League Player of the Season in the campaign before that.

But Watmore suffered two ACL injuries with the Wearsiders which ruled him out for three years.

He signed for Boro after being released by Sunderland in 2020.

“I’ve just been back to the Stadium of Light for the first time since I left,” Watmore told the South London Press. “That was a couple of weeks ago, so I’m playing them in quite quick succession.

“I had a lot of injuries at Sunderland and it didn’t quite go how I wanted it to on the pitch. But it is another fantastic club that I have so many great memories of.

“I met so many good people up there. I’ve been lucky, I’ve played for some brilliant football clubs and Millwall is no exception. Hopefully I’m in the squad on Saturday and I can go from there.”

See tomorrow’s South London Press for an exclusive interview with Watmore.
