Eccles expecting a more battle-hardened Broncos at Whitehaven after defeat in Championship opener

Mike Eccles expects an improved performance from London Broncos on Sunday when his squad travels to Cumbria to face Whitehaven in round rwo of the Championship.

The Broncos slipped to a 20-30 reverse to Batley Bulldogs at Plough Lane in last week’s season opener while Whitehaven suffered defeat on the road to Bradford.

Eccles believes his squad are now “battle-hardened” from last week’s opening fixture and has backed the Broncos to steadily improve as the season progresses.

Loan signings Zach Eckersley and Harvey Hill have been named in Eccles’ 21-man squad ahead of kick off. Welsh international Dalton Grant is an absentee though, he misses out with a rib injury picked up on Sunday.

Otherwise, Eccles reported a clean bill of health and is excited to make the journey north.

“We feel much better for last week’s game against Batley,” said Eccles. “We feel a bit more battle-hardened and ready to go.

“I expect us to be a lot better and sharper than round one. We were disappointed with that result, but we’ve refocused and can’t wait for Sunday.

“We’re expecting a tough game, it’s always tough in Cumbria. We’ve had a good week of preparation and collectively we all feel in a better place than this time last week.

“We’re pleased to welcome Zach and Harvey into the squad and travel in good confidence hopeful of picking up some useful points.”

Kick-off at the LEL Arena on Sunday is at 3pm.
