England boss Southgate: Scotland good value for point at Wembley

Gareth Southgate reckoned Scotland deserved credit after they held England to a goalless draw at Wembley Stadium.

The former Crystal Palace defender named South London-born Jadon Sancho on the bench. The Camberwell-born winger did not come on.

The result means the Three Lions remain second in Group D, with four points.

Speaking to ITV, Southgate said: “It was a frustrating night. We know we can play better. However we must give Scotland huge credit, they defended valiantly, they played well, and in the end we didn’t do enough to win the game.

“But if you’re not going to win a game in a tournament, you have to make sure you don’t lose it.

“We understand it’s disappointing for our supporters but we’ll dust ourselves down and move on for the next game.”

Southgate subbed off former Millwall loanee Harry Kane in the second half.

“I just felt we needed a few more runs in behind, and felt Marcus [Rashford] would give us that energy,” said Southgate. “We have to make these decisions based on what we see.

“The whole team could look at themselves, that starts with me, we need to be better. We didn’t do enough to win the game tonight.

“It was a very young team that played, some of them would have never experienced a night under that intensity and pressure. That’s a huge learning curve for them.

“We will now prepare for a different type of opponent in Czech Republic. We need to make the right decisions.”
