Erik ten Hag makes scoreline admission as Charlton bow out of the EFL Cup following 3-0 Man United defeat

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag admitted the 3-0 scoreline in Tuesday’s EFL Cup quarter-final win over Charlton was “over the top” – but believed his side should have booked their place in the last four earlier in the encounter.

The Red Devils knocked the Addicks out at the quarter-final stage of the EFL Cup after a 3-0 win at Old Trafford.

Brazilian winger Antony gave United the lead in the 21st minute, curling a shot from outside the box past Ashley Maynard-Brewer.

Marcus Rashford scored a double in the space of four minutes to seal United’s place in the next round.

“It was quite good,” Ten Hag told SkySports about United’s performance.

“I’m quite happy with it. We started the game very well – it was good energy and good focus.

“We pinned them and their half and created chances – Diogo Dalot and Fred had big opportunities.

“But then we made a great goal for 1-0 – it was a brilliant team goal. The finish from Antony was great.”

United held onto their goal advantage for almost 70 minutes before Rashford doubled their lead late on.

“You never know,” said Ten Hag, when asked whether he was nervous about Charlton finding an equaliser.

“They put on another striker and had more opportunities. I don’t think we allowed them.

“The 3-0 was over the top. But we had chances before – we should have finished this game early on.”
