Ex-GB man Leigh enjoys blue line role
Streatham utility man Leigh Jamieson believes the RedHawks showed good character despite an overtime loss in Basingstoke last weekend, and admits he is enjoying his time on defence after being switched back to the blue line in recent weeks.
The former GB and Elite league player, pictured above, was signed as a forward this summer from the Peterborough Phantoms, and slotted in well on the special teams for Jeremy Cornish, most notably on the powerplay.
A first goal of the season for the 33-year-old against last year’s league champions levelled things up after the Hampshire side had led 2-0, before Adam Wood briefly gave the Londoners the lead.
An equaliser by George Norcliffe made it 3-3 before Streatham hearts were broken in overtime thanks to a winner from Basingstoke coach Ashley Tait.
“It’s been a little strange waiting for a goal,” explained Jamieson, who leads the team for assists – 14. “Hopefully I can carry on from there. My first priority is defence. We showed good character to come back from 2-0 down but it was obviously a shame we couldn’t get that extra point in overtime.
“The defensive core is really solid and that’s giving us a good base to build on in games. I’m certainly enjoying being part of it. We need to turn things around after recent defeats and this weekend we will be going for four points.”
The RedHawks travel to league leaders Bracknell Bees tomorrow followed by a home game against the Raiders on Sunday. The fixtures offer Streatham a chance to consolidate their position in National Ice Hockey League South with Peterborough Phantoms and Swindon Wildcats, second and third respectively, threatening to edge away alongside the Bees.
“Bracknell are one of the favourites but it’s always a close game between us,” admitted alternate captain Wood, who switched up front after starting the season on defence. “Of course everyone loves playing in a local clash with the Raiders.
They may have slipped a few places down the table but will certainly bring a challenge that we will be ready for.”
