Ex-Palace midfielder lands permanent head coach role

Former Crystal Palace midfielder Neil Danns landed his first permanent coaching role after being named head coach of Macclesfield F.C. until the end of the 2022-23 season.

Danns, 40, was initially named as interim boss of the North West Counties Football League side after David McNabb stepped aside from the hot seat at Moss Rose.

The former Colchester and Bolton playmaker made 124 appearances at Selhurst Park, scoring 21 goals and recording eight assists.

Danns – capped by Guyana 15 times during his playing career – joined Palace from Birmingham City in 2008 and moved on to Leicester City in 2011.

Danns has picked up four wins on the bounce during his time as interim boss of Macclesfield.

Director of football Robbie Savage said in a statement on Macclesfield’s website: “In some respects, this was a difficult decision to make – as with things going so well, the question in the back of my mind was why change things?

“But having seen the player’s application and incredible desire to fight for Neil and Mark over recent weeks – that told me that this move was the right one.

“We all wanted Neil and Mark to get the job on a permanent basis – but we had to make sure that this was right for all parties first.

“For me, one of the most important things is that the players are visibly giving everything they have got for this Club and they are doing it with smiles on their faces.

“That tells you everything you need to know about where we are at and why this move was the right one to make.

“Now the players need to work harder than ever before for both Neil and Mark, as well as the Club in general, to give us the very best chance of achieving all our goals.”
