By KAI BENNETT

James McCarthy is reportedly closing in on a move to boyhood club Celtic after leaving Crystal Palace.

The 30-year-old made 49 appearances for the Eagles after signing from Everton in 2019. The midfielder’s contract expired at the South London club on July 1.

The Scottish Mail are reporting that McCarthy is one option under consideration at Parkhead.

The Irish midfielder grew up supporting Celtic and is now a free agent after leaving Crystal Palace.

McCarthy was capped at Republic of Ireland U17, U18, U19 and U21 level, before making his senior debut in 2010 and has gone on to make 43 appearances for his national side.
