Exclusive: Millwall open talks with Jed Wallace – with winger’s deal having 15 months left to run

Millwall have opened talks with Jed Wallace over his contract situation – with the attacker having 15 months left on his current terms.

Wallace has been one of the Championship’s leading offensive players over the past two campaigns.

But the former Wolves and Portsmouth player, 27, will only have a year remaining on his Den terms this summer.

Middlesbrough previously attempted to sign Wallace in August 2018 but the Teessiders only succeeded in landing George Saville instead of making it a double swoop.

Wallace has played 216 matches for the South London club.

Millwall manager Gary Rowett told the South London Press: “We’ve entered into discussions. If you look at his form over the last 18 months, or two seasons, he’s a player that any club in the Championship and beyond, I’m sure, would like to have in their team.

“He’s one that we’re in those discussions to try and see if we can come to a long-term solution. But he is still under contract.

“I’ve really enjoyed working with him and I’d obviously like to work with him a lot longer, if possible. He has been integral to a lot of things we’ve done this year.

“Sometimes those discussions are not always as straightforward for everybody. Therefore we’ll keep working and see where we get to.”

Wallace has got 19 goals and 18 assists since the start of last season.

“He has delivered consistently and that is all you ask players in those forward areas to do,” said Rowett. “It is not an easy league. We’ve spoken about our need, as a team, for more goals. But what Jed has done is delivered in those areas over a strong period. A lot of players will do it for half a season or for maybe 10 games, but he has done it for a longer period. He has been a vital player for us.

“He is quite a vocal player for us and a bit of a leader, in and around the place in different aspects. Everyone leads in different ways. There are also certain parts of his game that he has improved over the time we have been here.”
