Exclusive: One of Charlton’s Wembley heroes will be leaving the club this summer

Ben Purrington is on the hunt for a new club this summer after being told he will not be offered a new contract by Charlton Athletic.

The left-sided defender, 25, is a free agent at the end of this month.

And the South London Press understands that Purrington, 26, is exploring his options following his release by the SE7 outfit.

The Exeter-born defender initially joined Charlton on loan from Rotherham United in January 2019 and scored in their League One play-off final win over Sunderland. Purrington cancelled out Naby Sarr’s early own goal at Wembley with a 35th-minute leveller before Patrick Bauer struck in the fourth minute of second-half stoppage time.

Purrington signed a three-year deal with the Addicks in July 2019.

He has played 115 matches for Charlton and chipped in with nine goals.

Purrington’s last appearance came as an 89th minute substitute in the 1-0 victory at Rotherham United on April 9.

Twenty-four of his 27 league outings last season were starts but he was not in the squad for the final three fixtures.
