Exclusive: Palace keeper signed contract extension

Crystal Palace goalkeeper Remi Matthews has signed a new one-year contract extension with the club before heading out on loan to Scottish Premiership side St Johnstone, the South London Press understands.

The 28-year-old will spend the season on loan at McDiarmid Park after acting as cover for Vicente Guaita and Jack Butland last season.

Matthews, who joined the South Londoners last season following his release from Sunderland, featured against Manchester United in the recent pre-season tour of Australia.

Matthews will return to Selhurst Park at the end of the season and rejoin Patrick Vieira’s first-team squad.

While Matthews is yet to feature for Palace in a competitive outing, he was on the bench seven times last season.

Jack Butland was expected to leave the club this summer following the arrival of Sam Johnstone, but Butland suffered a broken hand against Manchester United in pre-season and has been ruled out for up to eight weeks.

U18  England goalkeeper Joe Whitworth impressed against Queens Park Rangers last week.

Vicente Guaita is heading into the last year of his contract with the Eagles. The 35-year-old Spanish keeper has made 126 appearances in all competitions since joining from Getafe on a free in 2018.
